How do you do stand up comedy?
Q. Hey, I am interested in doing stand-up comedy. I have never done it obviously, so I would like to know the process in becoming a stand-up comedian on the side. I am going to college next year (not related to any of this obviously) and would like to start stand up comedy then. I can't now since I live in a small town. Do most colleges offer a night or something where you can do stand up comedy even for a little bit? If not, is it hard to find places offering open mic nights? Thanks.

A. Don't risk your own money by committing to renting premises before you've proved whether there's a market for your business. It will cost you more to book venues initially but it saves being tied into a lease that you can't get out of without severe financial penalties. When approaching venues, check that your target audience matches their target customers. If your comedy acts are aimed at bachelor parties and the venue is for 18-30 singles, you won't get very far. Are you based in the UK? If so, contact your local Business Link for help in setting up your business. They'll give you guidance on making your plans clearer so that you have a better approach to venues. Good luck!

He did an interview about this on NPR and there's also this online: Get books of jokes and comedy routines and watch them on TV or DVD. Then experiment with modifying them, making enough changes that they become your idea. Milton Berle was called the Thief of Bad Gags because he liberally borrowed, which is not the same as stealing.

What is the difference between a (Shakespearean) romance and a comedy?

I read the play and although it seems to have similar characteristics to a comedy (a love story with a planned marraige in act 5) it seems somehow different.
