Films are produced by recording images from the world with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or special effects. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema gives motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue. Traditional films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement. The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) had historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, photo-play, flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while the Europeans prefer cinema. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Should I start my career in film by attending film school? Q. I've always wanted to work in the film-movie industry. Lately I decided to attend a 2-year film school when I turn 18, but some of my friends discourage me from doing this. They say film school is money-wasting, that using that money to make a movie is even better! I'm very confused, if not attending a film school then what should I do?? Are there any other ways than going to film school? Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks very much in advance! Asked by Liver - Fri Aug 7 20:57:45 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you grew up around filmmakers, and have already learned everything they know about film making, then maybe you don't need film school. Otherwise, you should go to "film school." Note that there are various universities with which you can choose film as your major, so you'd still get a full, well-rounded college education, and also learn what you need about making films. Answered by Glenn - Fri Aug 7 21:22:11 2009 How is someone hired to direct a film? Q. I'm wondering because I want to be a film director. I mean, say you have no history such as films you've made and all you have is that you studied Film at college and university - how do you get hired and found out to begin with? Through your own amateur movies you make and put on Youtube, submit to the film festivals etc? And I guess it's to do with you saying you're up for making a film based on a particular screenplay, so how do you notify a screenwriter you're interested in their script, and how do you find screenplays? Asked by James - Sun Jan 25 08:35:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I guess there are several possible avenues. The first would be to build a reputation by directing an independent/self financed movie. Christopher Nolan (director of The Dark Knight and Batman Begins) made one called Following. I believe M. Night Shymalan (?sp) also got his start this way. A second way would be to have the rights to a script and go out and find the financing. Unless you have some connections to begin with, this may prove difficult. The money people may like the script, but insist on an established director if they are going to put their money up. In this case, you might be able to get somewhere by insisting you are hires as an assistant director. There are some in Hollywood who specifically look for up and coming talent… [cont.] Answered by Justin H - Sun Jan 25 09:14:45 2009 What film based on one of your favorite books did you hate?
Q. And what film based on a book did you love? The film based on a book that I hated the most was Captain Corelli's mandolin. Friends who saw the film without reading the book really liked it, but I hated it as it had a completely different ending to the book!
