A genre (pronounced /ˈʒɑːnrə/, also /ˈdʒɑːnrə/; from French "kind" or "sort", from Latin: genus (stem gener-), Greek: genos, γένος) is a loose set of criteria for a category of composition; the term is often used to categorize literature and speech, but is also used for any other form of art or utterance. Genres are vague categories with no fixed boundaries, they are formed by sets of conventions, and many works cross into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions. The scope of the word "genre" is sometimes confined to art and culture, particularly literature and music, but it has a long history in rhetoric as well. In genre studies the concept of genre is not compared to originality. Rather, all works are recognized as either reflecting on or participating in the conventions of genre. From Wikipedia under the

Please tell me songs similar to it, or tell me the genre! Asked by Ryan - Sun Jun 21 10:00:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I used to call it "indie alternative", but the definition of that term has changed in the past decade. If you like that song, you'll likely enjoy everything else the Smashing Pumpkins ever recorded, as well as most of the songs recorded by the following artists: The Violent Femmes, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Jane's Addiction, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Placebo, R.E.M., Our Lady Peace, Marcy Playground & The Verve. Describe the difference between the genre of fantasy and the genre of science fiction. Asked by Lauren - Fri May 1 16:06:58 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Orson Scott Card stated it very succinctly: "Science fiction is about what *could* be but isn't. Fantasy is about what *couldn't* be." Science fiction depicts things that are not yet possible in our world, but which we believe may one day be possible. Usually it involves futuristic technology and/or scientific phenomenon. Super-intelligent robots, deep space exploration, and extraterrestrial life are among the themes that commonly show up in science fiction. Science fiction stories typically take place in the future, but not always: there are ones set in the present or the past (or, in the case of Star Wars, in some undefined setting with no direct relationship to our world). Science fiction that was written in the past has often become… [cont.] Answered by marbehraglaim - Tue May 5 02:59:11 2009 What is the difference between magic realism and fantasy genre in terms of movies/novels?

Thanks for the help. Asked by bookworm14 - Thu Apr 16 00:00:30 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Magic realism, or magical realism, is an artistic genre in which magical elements or illogical scenarios appear in an otherwise realistic or even "normal" setting. It has been widely used in relation to literature, art, and film. Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction and horror by the expectation that it steers clear of technological and macabre themes, respectively, though there is a great deal of overlap between the three (collectively known as speculative fiction). Prominent English-language fantasy writers have stated that "magic realism" is only another name for fantasy fiction.
