From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Theatre (or theater, see spelling differences) is the branch of the performing arts defined by Bernard Beckerman as what "occurs when one or more persons, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to another or others." By this broad definition, theatre has existed since the dawn of man, as a result of human tendency for storytelling. Since its inception, theatre has come to take on many forms, utilizing speech, gesture, music, dance, and spectacle, combining the other performing arts, often as well as the visual arts, into a single artistic form. The word derives from the Ancient Greek theatron (θέατρον) meaning, "the seeing place." From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why are people in theatre audiences so old? Q. When I go to the theatre, I notice that the audience has mainly people in their 50s, 60s and 70s. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a classic or a new play, pure entertainment or something to really think about. I know lots of tickets cost much more than going to the movies or renting DVD's. Is it the money or is there something about the medium itself that makes it seem lame to younger people? Asked by holacarinados - Tue May 22 23:51:33 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think that there are two main influences here. 1. Quite simply put, theater is not seen as "cool" by younger audiences. Plus it is probably the case that most younger people do not think it will be interesting or exciting. 2. There is a certain amount of elitism surrounding theater and classical music. A belief that you have to be of a certain age or class or level of education to understand it. I believe that this has led to a major decline in the popularity of this type of art among our younger population. I am a music educator and I have brought students to classical music concerts as well as musicals. Usually they go into the event thinking that they will not enjoy it and most come out really excited about what they just saw. I'm an actor who sings well but I'm honestly too shy to audition for musical theatre because I don't have solid sight-reading skills. I have had voice training and practice with choral singing, and have a very good ear, but I'm unsure if you need to be able to read music in the rehearsal process when learning the score. Does the musical director working on the show help you? P.S. I'm referring only to professional Equity theatre. Asked by wrongband - Mon May 19 18:15:49 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It sounds as if you can already read music. Lots of people get by without being able to sight-sing. However, it is a skill that can be developed. Q. I live in a small community and we don't have many rescources for this type of thing. We have gone through the school a couple of times but they always have the last word and are not willing to be flexable. I would like to start a community theatre group, where we can be flexable and invite all types of community members to join in. Most church's don't object of other denominations joining things, if it brings in youth. Good luck! Answered by Tshark - Sat Jun 9 12:34:51 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "theatre" Theatre (Greek "theatron"), enjoys the distinction of two spellings: in British English, "theatre" and in American English, "theater". There is no technical distinction between the meanings of the two spellings, however most theatre artists prefer the English spelling because it creates a historical nod to the ancient Greek term theatron. Some also use the American spelling to designate a theatre building and the English term to reference the art itself, as in the "art of theatre." Theatre is that branch of the performing arts concerned with the creation of stories or narratives for (or with) an audience using combinations of acting, speech, gesture, music, dance, object manipulation, sound and spectacle — indeed, any one or more elements of the other performing arts. In addition to standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, musicals, ballet, mime, kabuki, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, mummers' plays, and pantomime.
